Bar code

Symbolic, machine-readable representation of a book’s ISBN, sometimes (especially in the US) with the retail price built in. The bar code generally appears in the bottom-right corner of the back cover.

This definition is extracted (and expanded on) from the book Getting Published: A Companion for the Humanities and Social Sciences by Gerald Jackson and Marie Lenstrup. It was first referred to in the blog Getting Published in a post on the requirements and costs of self-publication.

    Dear Gerald,
    I’d like to add that for self publishers a printer should be able to purchase one for you. Generally they shouldn’t cost you too much, as is more an admin type fee. Also it’s worth noting that if you intend to pitch a publication to the major retailers, you will need a barcode. I’m looking over your ws, and want to congratulate you for its clarity. I’ll recommend it and hope it blossoms.
