Device used to store and display digital material. Some e-publishing advocates believe that in time e-readers will replace the printed book but to date adoption of these devices has been hindered by a high price, awkward construction, poor reading experience and lack of suitable e-content.

The most high-profile e-reader today is Amazon’s Kindle with the Sony eReader also grabbing attention. However, in terms of downloads, the most successful e-reader to date is Apple’s iPhone.

This definition is extracted (and expanded on) from the book Getting Published: A Companion for the Humanities and Social Sciences by Gerald Jackson and Marie Lenstrup.
