Originating publisher

The leading publisher who commissions and produces a print-ready co-edition, usually also printing the final copies for the co-publishers.

For example, the University of Washington Press recently published the monograph Submitting to God by Sylva Frisk. You would have to dig deep into the details on page iv of the book so see that in fact the work originated from NIAS Press with UWP buying the North American edition (essentially buying X copies).

This definition is extracted (and expanded on) from the book Getting Published: A Companion for the Humanities and Social Sciences by Gerald Jackson and Marie Lenstrup.
