Coated paper

Paper that has been given a coating on one or both sides, making it smooth and glossy. Such paper is used for book covers and jackets, especially. It may also be used in the body pages either as partial inserts (for a frontispiece, individual plates or a colour section) tipped into the book or wholly (if the book has many high-quality images). However, use of such paper is much more expensive and dramatically increases the weight (and perhaps shipping costs) of such a volume..

This definition is extracted (and expanded on) from the book Getting Published: A Companion for the Humanities and Social Sciences by Gerald Jackson and Marie Lenstrup.
