Book more likely aimed at sale (via bookshops) to individuals, produced with a laminated paper cover, and quite often with a cheaper, perfect binding. Paperbacks are priced far lower than hardbacks. They first emerged in the 1930s with the advent of mass-market publishing and are the dominant book format in some types of publishing.
