Cloth
A type of covering for a hardback (cased) volume. Traditionally, this cloth covering was calico, buckram and similar cottons or linens. Today, the boards used for hardbacks are rarely covered with real cloth; more durable synthetic material is used instead.
This definition is extracted (and expanded on) from the book Getting Published: A Companion for the Humanities and Social Sciences by Gerald Jackson and Marie Lenstrup.
