Crop

(1) At the typesetting stage, to cut away part of an illustration (e.g. so that it fits on a page). Of course, cropping of illustrations is not just a typesetting thing. For instance, this is a common technique used by photographers to enhance the effect of a picture.

(2) At the printing stage, to trim the printed book to its final size after the pages have been bound to the cover.

This definition is extracted (and expanded on) from the book Getting Published: A Companion for the Humanities and Social Sciences by Gerald Jackson and Marie Lenstrup. It was first referred to in the blog Getting Published in a post on file conversion errors at the typesetting stage.
